Your Appointment: What to Expect

Comprehensive Evaluation

At your appointment, our low vision doctor will:

  • Review your medical history and answer all your questions.
  • Conduct a thorough functional vision examination.
  • Collaborate with your eye doctor (ophthalmologist or optometrist) to co-manage your care.

Assessment and Goal Setting

We will help you set visual goals and create a plan to improve your functional ability. Key assessments include:

  • Visual Acuity/Contrast: We measure how well you see at different distances. We also test how well you can distinguish objects from their backgrounds.
  • Visual Fields: We test for central or peripheral vision loss.
  • Low Vision Refraction: We do special tests to find the best prescriptive glasses, magnifiers, or telescopes to improve your low vision.
  • Fundus Photography: We take images of your retina to help assess your vision, educate you on your condition, and guide your treatment.
  • Ocular Health Exam (As Needed): We may check your eye pressure or do a dilated exam to check your eye health.

Customized Treatment Plan

Based on your exam, we will create a personalized plan that may include:

  • Prescriptive devices: glasses, magnifiers, and telescopes tailored to your vision needs.
  • Occupational Therapy: Offering new ways to use your vision in daily tasks. Occupational Therapy provides strategies and methods to complete everyday activities.
  • Access Technology: Training on using assistive tech, including devises and software, to boost your independence.

We aim to be more than a low vision clinic. Think of us as part of your extended family, here to support your journey with vision loss.

Preparing for Your Appointment

To make the most of your visit, follow these tips:

  • Prepare ahead: Complete all necessary forms and plan to arrive 30 minutes early.
  • Bring someone: A friend or family member can provide valuable support.
  • Travel safely: Arrange transportation in advance to ensure you arrive on time.
  • Bring your tools: Please bring any glasses or devices you use. They will help us better understand your needs.

Insurance and Financial Help

  • Insurance: We accept Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) Insurance and Medicare along with advantage plans. We also offer a self-pay rate. You are responsible for any co-pays or charges not covered by your insurance. Please Note: Refraction tests and many devices are usually not covered by insurance.
  • Affordable for Everyone: Financial assistance may be available through grants and donations for those who qualify. Please re-apply for grants each calendar year.
