Is Driving with Low Vision Still Possible?
Facing macular degeneration and glaucoma, Audrey feared losing her license. The right tools and training helped her pass her test.
After being diagnosed with macular degeneration and glaucoma, Audrey thought her driving days might be over. Vision loss from these conditions can make it difficult or impossible to pass a standard driving test.
But there is a path forward for many people with low vision who aren’t ready to give up yet. With guidance from her doctor and training through Spectrios, Audrey was able to continue driving safely and independently. In her own words, she shares her journey below.
Three years ago, I was diagnosed with macular degeneration and glaucoma. My vision became so difficult that I reached a point where I could no longer drive. I was receiving retina injections, and my doctor recommended that I go to Spectrios.
I’m so glad I did.
I met with Dr. Park, and she was wonderful. She took the time to understand what I was experiencing and showed me different things I could do to make everyday life easier. She even prescribed a magnifying glass that has been a tremendous help.
With Dr. Park’s help and the tools she gave me, I was able to pass my driving test and continue driving.
I usually drive only short distances and during the daytime, but being able to drive means so much to me. It helps me maintain my independence. I didn’t even start driving until I was 40, and now I want to be able to drive for as long as I safely can. If it weren’t for Spectrios, I believe I would have had to give up driving three years ago.
Everyone at Spectrios has been so kind and encouraging. It is a very special place, and I know that over the past 40 years, they have helped so many people like me.
I would recommend Spectrios to anyone who is struggling with vision loss. They don’t just help you see better—they help you find ways to keep living your life and doing the things that are important to you.
I’m so grateful I came here. Spectrios is truly a special place. God bless Spectrios!
